Your Home is Already a Literacy Classroom, You Just Might not Know it Yet!
You don't have to be a reading teacher to make a difference in your child's literacy journey.
Research published in the Early Childhood Education Journal found that children who have books in the home and who see the adults around them reading , ust reading, for themselves, show significantly higher reading frequency and more positive attitudes toward literacy.
Let that sink in. Not drilling. Not structured practice. Simply having books around. Simply reading in the same room as your child.
This is one of my favorite findings because it's so accessible. It doesn't require a curriculum or a special app. It requires presence and a trip to the library.
What does this look like in practice? It might be keeping a small basket of books where your child can always reach them. Reading on the couch while they play nearby. Talking about what you're reading, even if it's a magazine or a news article. Letting them see that reading is something adults do because it's worth doing.
At MMC Literacy Collective, we talk about parents as partners ,not passengers, in their child's literacy growth. You are not just dropping your child off at a program and hoping for the best. You are part of the reason it works.
Your home is already a powerful place for your child's reading journey.
We're just here to help you make the most of it.
Rooting for your Dear Reader,
Megan
